The Massaleit The Massaleit people are predominantly sedentary African cultivators, Muslim, and many of them speak Arabic as well as communicating in their local language and practicing their own cultural traditions. Their homeland is called Dar Massaleit and forms the westernmost part of Sudan. According to the 1955-56 census, the only Sudanese census that included information on tribes, there were 150,000 Massaleit in Dar Massaleit and about 51,000 Massaleit on the Chad. However, many Massaleit are found in other parts of the Sudan, especially in the east and the Nile valley where they sought work in agricultural schemes.
